Photography 1: Introduction to Digital Photography

Learn how to make the most of your digital camera and create better photographs by taking control of image creation and learning the basics of manual digital camera functions such as ISO settings, white balance, image resolution, shutter speeds and aperture settings. Courses will include hands- on assignments and students will look at historical and contemporary photographers to better inform their own process and learn about image aesthetics. A digital camera with manual capabilities is required for this course. No computer or photo editing skills will be covered in this course.

Photography 2: The Digital Darkroom
Instructor: Jacqueline Poutasse
Take your photography to the next level as you lean to manipulate digital photographs using Adobe Photoshop. The course will cover basic and creative Photoshop editing techniques, as well as photographic image aesthetics. Various Photoshop techniques will be demonstrated and students will be given time to experiment with these techniques with assistance from the instructor. Students will also be given photo assignments outside of course to assist them in understanding the concepts covered in the course. Each new technique is the foundation for the next so it is important that students attend course each week as there will not be time to repeat lectures or demonstrations. We will be using Photoshop CS3 and Photoshop Elements as needed. Students must have a working knowledge of their camera for this course, as we will not be covering any basic camera skills.

Photography 3: Intermediate Digital Photography
Instructor: Jacqueline Poutasse
Continuing students who have learned to control their camera in manual mode and are comfortable with composition and light will take their photography to the next level in this course. Focus on off- camera flash, custom white balance and shooting in RAW, as well as continuing to explore aspects of composition and light. Weekly photo critiques and possible offsite meet-ups for shooting round out the course. Students must have completed Photo 1 and 2 to take this course. A book is required.

Thursday Morning Shootout
Instructor: Jacqueline Poutasse
Join us on Thursday mornings this summer as we take the photo class on the road. Students will learn about various types of photography while shooting at locations such as Back Bay, Botanical gardens and the Norfolk Zoo. Students must have completed the Photo 1 class or have permission from the instructor to take this course. A digital SLR camera and tripod are needed for this class. Transportation and entrance fees to shooting locations are not included.

Photographing Children
Instructors: Jacqueline Poutasse and Judith Chauvette
Children are fascinating to photograph. It’s fun to capture them as they discover many things for the first time. Whether you are a parent who simply wants to take better pictures of your kids, someone looking to break into the business of children's photography or a seasoned photographer who wants to refine their skills, this course will introduce you to the equipment, materials, and strategies necessary to begin photographing children. It will also provide the inspiration and skills you need to capture the spirit and individuality of children in your photographs. The first three sessions will be held at Virginia MOCA and the fourth session will be held off site to photograph children in a playground environment. A digital SLR camera is required and students must be familiar with basic camera settings. Members $130/ Non-members $145

Private Lessons
Having trouble matching your schedule with our current photography offerings? Get one-on-one instruction in Photography and/or Photoshop related areas that meet your specific photographic needs and goals. Date and time of lessons to be determined by the student and instructor. Lessons must be scheduled for a minimum of one hour, but may be billed in 1/2 hour increments thereafter. Private lessons should be scheduled at least two weeks in advance if possible. All private lessons must be cancelled at least 4 days (96 hours) prior to the scheduled lesson to avoid being charged.
Members $45 per hour for one person or $60 per hour for two people
Non-members $60 per hour for one person or $75 per hour for two people
