New Waves 2018

Virginia MOCA proudly celebrates its 23rd juried exhibition, New Waves 2018. 

We invite Virginia artists to submit works for the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art’s (MOCA) annual juried exhibition. 

    Juror:  Cay-Sophie Rabinowitz (born in Norfolk, Virginia) is Director of OSMOS, a network of independent editorial and curatorial platforms based in New York. The brand OSMOS was founded in Berlin in 1997. Rabinowitz has been Senior Editor of Parkett and Artistic Director of Art Basel as well as faculty at Columbia University and Parsons. Rabinowitz has edited and published numerous monographs and critical essays on modern and contemporary art and culture. In 2011 Rabinowitz launched OSMOS Magazine to be an art quarterly “about the use and abuse of photography” wherein established practitioners are featured alongside the next generation. A recognized art world insider, Cay Sophie Rabinowitz, is known for her highly professional, yet deeply personal approach.

    • Best in Show:                         $2,000
    • Second Place:                        $1,000
    • Third Place:                              $500
    • Honorable Mentions:                $250 (two awarded)
    • People’s Choice Award:           $750

    Calendar:       Submissions Open: 9 am, November 1, 2017

                            Entry Deadline: Midnight, January 8, 2018

    Eligibility: All artists currently residing in Virginia.

    Eligible Artwork: Work in all artistic mediums and made between the years of 2013-2017 is accepted for review. Art exhibited in previous New Waves exhibitions is not eligible for review.

    Submissions:  Except for video and sound work, submissions for the New Waves 2018 exhibition will be accepted through online application only.

    • Information can be found on the website ZAPPlication, a central Web site that allows individual artists to apply online to multiple art shows. Digital images of artwork are uploaded for jury review, ensuring that all artwork in the system is in a consistent, high-quality format.  Juror selections for New Waves 2018 are made online.
    • There are tutorials on the ZAPPlication website that can help you to prepare your work for submission, including information on free editing software.
    • Zapplication requires a submission of 10 images.
    • These images can be multiple views of the same work or 10 separate works of art.
    • If you have less than 10 images that you want to submit, repeatedly enter the same image.

    Fees: A non-refundable fee of $35 (credit card or Paypal) is required.

    Save the Date: Opening Reception, Friday, March 16, 6:30pm. Exhibition on view March 17 - August 19, 2018.
