Annual event over Father's Day weekend
In 1952, a small group of artists presented an outdoor art show at the boardwalk, with the proceeds benefiting a fellow artist who had fallen ill. Those artists later formed an organization which is today the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA). In 1956, the first official Boardwalk Art Show was held. Top prize was $25 and 104 artists participated. Today, Best in show wins $10,000 and the Boardwalk show is ranked as on of the top 100 outdoor art shows in the country.
Annual Event in September
The Neptune Festival Art & Craft Show (September 30-October 2) is part of a citywide festival at the Virginia Beach oceanfront. Commercial vendors run 1st-17th Streets on the boardwalk and the Art/Craft Show runs 18th-29th Streets on the boardwalk. The Art & Craft Show portion is produced by The Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art. The art/craft show jury fee is $30 and the artist booth fee is only $350 per 10'x10' for the entire weekend.
Artists and craftsmen in all media are eligible for the art/craft portion of festival, and acceptance is based on a blind jury process. The art/craft section of the festival (18th-29th Streets) does not allow commercial or imported products. In all cases, the spirit of our guidelines intends that the work depend heavily on the "handmade" aspect of art and craft. If you are not an artist or crafter you may apply for the commercial section of the festival by contacting the Neptune Festival headquarters directly at 757-498-0215.
