2011's winning poster design was painted by local watercolorist Russell Yerkes.
"Watercolor has been my choice of medium from the first time I played with it. Each painting I do is a journey; putting a puzzle together as it evolves," said Yerkes, who left Virginia Beach in 1994. He has shown work in the Boardwalk Art Show off-and-on since the 1970s, and has won several awards over the years. Yerkes currently resides in North Carolina and exhibits work in galleries and outdoor art shows on the East Coast.
Creating a poster design for the Boardwalk Art Show & Festival has been a goal of his for some time. "I was having breakfast at Mary's [restaurant] at the oceanfront and noticed all the old posters on the wall," said Yerkes. "I thought to myself, 'I know a lot of these artists!'"
His painting for the 2011 poster is called "Tussle" and Yerkes describes it as very typical of his style. "It's an ongoing series I've been working on for about 10 years. In this particular image I wanted to re-create the activity where they're tussling with each other in a crab pot."
